What can regular people do to fight the Climate Emergency?
Are we fucked? Not yet!
You can fight. You must fight.
There’s still time. And plenty to do that will have meaningful impact.
Shit is going down and you want to move your ass? Great. You’re probably only reading this because you are a concerned human being. It’s ok if you feel worried, the problem at hand fully deserves your attention. You’re awesome for caring.
If you can pressure for high-level policy change, that is what is really needed. You and everyone you know may live a very “green“ lifestyle, but it is orders of magnitude less problematic than the shipping and transport, electricity and heating sectors. Greenhouse gas has to be turned off at the sources, not with the general public end users.
priority number 1: (This is orders of magnitude more helpful than anything you can do personally)
DEMAND SOLAR, WIND, and other viable Renewables. Demand NUCLEAR. NOW.
but for our personal actions:
One easy thing to (and isn’t negative for your body!) is eat a little less meat. If everyone just skipped at least one day a week, it would make an enormous impact (UN)
Fridays For Future You’ve heard of this. Especially for young activists - check out the website briefly to see what Greta and others are up to this week.
- “Whoever you are, wherever you are, we need you”Extinction Rebellion - “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
The Sunrise Movement - (if you are stateside)
The 350 movement -Stop Fossil Fuels. Build 100% Renewables.
Greenpeace So I’m not a big personal fan of Greenpeace (because of their stone-age position on nuclear energy - which we undeniably need in the mix by the way) , but whatever, each to their own.
Don’t be afraid of nuclear energy!! - educate yourself on it. Look at this video, it’s pretty clear cut stuff.
Consider changing your default search engine to ecosia - who donate the bigger chunk of their revenue directly to planting trees in critical areas
Project Vesta wants to put gigatonnes of olivine onto beaches which will help sequester CO2. Olivine is a very common mineral on Earth, composed mainly of Mg2SiO4 and Fe2SiO4. The idea is to mine the olivine, pulverise it and dump it on the beaches where the ocean will do the rest. Olivine will sequester an amount of CO2 similar in mass to itself. It is proposed mining, pulverising, and transporting to beaches is net carbon negative.
Don’t be afraid of the idea of cutting down trees! Trees soak up CO2. Encourage the increasing usage of wood produts. Wood can be stronger than steel.
We have time - not much, but its there. The window is closing - we have until about 2030 to reach carbon neutral. We are not on course to hit that target
Don’t be afraid of the idea of cutting down trees! Tree soak up
Not the activist type? Not to worry, every little helps, as every small discussion you have with friends and coleagues about sends out a ripple - a feedback loop which has found to be useful.
